Getting Ready for NeurIPS (1): The Conference Format
From the General Chairs, Shakir Mohamed and Sanmi Koyejo
NeurIPS 2022 will bring together a broad community around machine learning, artificial intelligence, and neural information processing over two weeks: the first week is in-person in New Orleans, followed by a virtual conference week. Both weeks have unique events at which to connect and learn. If you have not yet planned your attendance, register here and reserve your hotel.
In this post, we summarize components of the conference and some highlights of what to look forward to when we kick off NeurIPS on 27 November.
In-Person Week
The first week of the conference will be held in-person from 27 November – 3 December 2022. The in-person program prioritizes in-person engagement and networking. Posters will be the primary focus while we are in person, and we’ve moved the contributed talks to the virtual week (see below for details).
For those not able to attend the in-person week, keynotes, workshops and affinity group sessions will be livestreamed. Access to these streams requires a virtual-only registration (also see the next section for events in the dedicated virtual conference week). Take a look at our schedule to see what is planned during Week 1 of NeurIPS 2022:
With a 20 percent increase in accepted papers, you’ll want to dig in early to see this year’s 2,906 accepted papers.
Keep checking the schedule for the live and virtual weeks of NeurIPS:
New this year, NeurIPS is organizing a high school outreach program and needs volunteers. Other important events to participate in are the competition showcase, socials and the expo.
Virtual Conference Week
It isn’t possible for all members of our community to attend in-person. This year, we have a second virtual week, with its own events that take advantage of virtual platforms: it focuses on asynchronous engagement with this year’s proceedings and authors, and events that have been shown to be well suited to online engagement. There are no virtual poster sessions. Instead, virtual presentations will include pre-recorded videos and asynchronous chat.
Virtual week highlights:
- Tutorials ar in the virtual week this year – see the list of tutorials.
- There is a third workshop day for online-only workshops.
- Oral presentations all take place in the virtual week. Selected papers are presented in a panel format, with papers grouped into sets of five with several panels in parallel.
- Other events include virtual affinity group meetings and competition workshops.
Week 2 virtual NeurIPS 2022 schedule is below: Featured paper panels start at 9am PST (UTC-8) and 5pm PST (UTC-8). You can add the schedule to your calendar by downloading the events from the conference website.
What’s Next
We encourage you to join the conference both in-person and online by registering if you have not yet done so. All the organizing teams are now hard at work to bring all the final details for this year’s new hybrid NeurIPS conference format.
Next week, our second post in this series will provide a more detailed update on the steps taken to ensure the safety and inclusion for attendees, followed by a post that will dig into specific conference highlights.
See you soon in New Orleans!
